The Western Australian Government is committed to supporting the development of sustainable and diversified sports and recreational system that encourages participation, develops talents and contributes to the health and well-being of individuals and groups State. As the Local government department, Sport and Cultural industries, we strongly advocate for the benefits of sport and recreation, not only for the physical but for the positive impact on the mental and emotional welfare of the community.

Implementation

The Department is proud to develop programs and projects in partnership with the community that promotes a series of benefits beyond traditional aspirations to improve health and well-being. These include:

  • Stronger and more connected communities;
  • Inclusion of minority social groups;
  • Diversion and education of young people at risk;
  • Healthy child development and contact with nature;
  • Economic results;
  • Educational outcomes;

Sport and recreation help bring families together through shared experiences and shared achievements. Through participation, sport helps to address anti-social behaviors and can support education. Sport and recreation contribute to economic growth through business and employment investment and help to maintain the environment through the protection of open space and natural areas. It also promotes the use of active modes of transport, such as cycling and walking.
